Bill Doggett was Ella’s pianist and Music Director during this time period. During 1940-1941, he played a leading role with Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the Girl Singer for The Lucky Millinder Orchestra, for whom Bill Doggett was both pianist and arranger. Between 1942-44, he also played a key role with The Ink Spots, as their arranger and pianist-uncredited- on their biggest hit records.

About Bill Doggett, Jazz Pianist and Organist
Bill Doggett was the legendary Rhythm and Blues organist, jazz pianist and arranger who created the landmark Gold record, Billboard and Cash Box award winning 1956 Rock n Roll instrumental hit, Honky Tonk, Parts 1 and 2.
Bill Doggett , a Philadelphia native is one of the most important forces helping to usher forward the dawn of Jazz Organ in the mid 1950s, along with his peer, Wild Bill Davis.
Both Doggett and Davis kickstarted the golden opportunities that Jimmy Smith, Groove Holmes, Charles Earland and a whole new generation of Jazz Organist and Jazz Combos would enjoy.
Without Bill Doggett and Wild Bill Davis, Jazz and Rock organ would not have had the renaissance that allowed Jimmy Smith forward to Joey De Francesco to become the icons in jazz organ that they have become today.

My uncle replaced Bill Davis in Louis Jordan’s Band 1947-1951 when Davis went out on the road as a Jazz Organ Combo
Bill Doggett is important in the annals of Harlem 1930s-40s jazz history as both pianist and arranger for The Lucky Millinder Orchestra 1939-41. As pianist with Lucky Millinder, Bill Doggett has his film premiere in the important 1939 All Black Cast Harlem movie, Paradise in Harlem that showcases the legenday blues singer, Mamie Smith.
The years 1942-1945 he joined Decca Records iconic artists, The Ink Spots and Ella Fitzgerald as pianist and arranger. Doggett recorded many sessions with both artists for Decca Records.
Bill Doggett was Ella’s pianist and Music Director during this time period.
During the years 1946-47, Doggett shined as both pianist and composer on important sessions with Illinois Jacquet All Stars, The Lucky Thompson and Johnny Otis Orchestras recording for Apollo and Excelsior Records.

Destiny and meteor like fame came to Bill Doggett when he joined Syd Nathan’s KING RECORDS headquartered in Cincinnati Ohio.
During the 1950s, Bill Doggett would become one of King Records most famous headliners and money making recording artists.
Bill Doggett had been Ella’s pianist and Music Director in the mid 1940s and during the years 1951-53 was responsible for keybig hits of Ella’s including the wonderful scat singing anthem, Smooth Sailing. Listen to Smooth Sailing below in the music player
In the early 1960s, in addition to his popular tours, Ella Fitzgerald, and Della Reese recorded albums showcasing Bill Doggett, the arranger.
Bill Doggett had been Ella’s pianist and Music Director in 1943 as well as frequent collaborator in 1944-1945 in which both Ella and Doggett recorded many sides for Decca
In the late 1960s, Doggett recorded with James Brown a classic Funk record for the King label titled, Honky Tonk Hot Popcorn. The record became a Funk classic bringing two of King Records’ most famous recording artists of the late 1950s-early 1960s together for the first time
